STAGE 4 · THE MESSAGE COMPLETED
Chapter 28: The Farewell Hajj
His only Hajj after the Hijrah — and the sermon that every Muslim should know

Everyone wanted to follow him
“As far as my eyes could see”
Following his steps
- 8th Minā — the Day of Tarwiyah: he prayed Ẓuhr, ‘Aṣr, Maghrib, ‘Ishā’ and Fajr there.
- 9th ‘Arafah — the sermon, then standing in du‘ā’ until sunset.
- Night Muzdalifah — Maghrib and ‘Ishā’ together, sleep, then Fajr and du‘ā’.
- 10th Minā — the Jamrah with seven pebbles, the sacrifice, then ṭawāf of the Ka‘bah in Makkah.
All these steps are in Jābir’s hadith (Muslim 1218).
“As sacred as this day”
At ‘Arafah, at midday, he rode his camel al-Qaṣwā’ into the valley and addressed the people:
No one may harm a Muslim’s life or take his property. The old revenge killings and the injustice of the Jāhiliyyah were cancelled.
Kindness to women — and no race above another
At Minā, in the days after
He said: “O people, your Lord is one and your father is one. An Arab is not better than a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab than an Arab, nor a red [light-skinned] person than a black person, nor a black person than a red one — except by taqwā.”
“O Allah, bear witness!”
“This day I have perfected your religion”
Islam is complete. Nothing needs to be added to it or taken away from it.
“Perhaps I will not perform Hajj after this”
Some popular versions of the “Farewell Sermon” that circulate online mix authentic sentences with unauthentic ones. Teach from the authentic texts: Muslim 1218, the sermons at Minā on the Day of Sacrifice in al-Bukhari 1739 and 1741, and the reports graded authentic by the scholars.
