Waiting for permission

“I have been shown the land of your emigration”

After the Second Pledge of al-‘Aqabah, the Muslims began leaving Makkah for Yathrib, quietly, in small groups. Abū Bakr wanted to go too…

‘Ā’ishah said: “…The Prophet ﷺ said to the Muslims: ‘I have been shown the land of your emigration: a land of palm trees between two lava fields’ — that is, the two Ḥarrahs. So those who emigrated went towards Madinah, and most of those who had emigrated to Abyssinia came back to Madinah. Abū Bakr got ready to leave for Madinah, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: ‘Wait, for I hope that I will be given permission.’ Abū Bakr said: ‘Do you really hope for that — may my father be your ransom?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ So Abū Bakr held himself back to accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and for four months he fed two riding camels he had with the leaves of the samur tree — that is, khabaṭ (leaves beaten off the tree).”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3905Sahih

Most of the Muslims left before him; he stayed in Makkah until Allah gave him permission, and Abū Bakr waited with him.

The plot

“They plan — and Allah plans”

Quraysh saw the Muslims gathering in Yathrib and were afraid. Their leaders met and decided to get rid of the Prophet ﷺ. Allah tells us what they were planning:

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
Surat al-Anfāl 8:30
Ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm: the leaders of Quraysh met in Dār al-Nadwah and agreed that young men from every clan would strike him together, so that no single clan could be blamed. Many extra details in the books of Seerah come through weak reports and are left out here.

‘Alī in the bed

That night ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib slept in the Prophet’s bed, and the Prophet ﷺ left the house. The men of Quraysh watched the house all night, thinking that ‘Alī was the Prophet ﷺ. In the morning they rushed in — and found ‘Alī. Allah had turned their plot back on them.

Source: Musnad Aḥmad (3251), from Ibn ‘Abbās — told here in summary. Ibn Ḥajar (Fatḥ al-Bārī 7/278) and Ibn Kathīr (al-Bidāyah 3/178) graded its chain ḥasan; some scholars, such as al-Albānī, graded it weak. Ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm includes it.

al-Ḥākim also reports ‘Alī’s sleeping in the bed and called his chain ṣaḥīḥ, with al-Dhahabī agreeing; al-Arna’ūṭ, like al-Albānī, graded Aḥmad’s chain weak (one narrator, ‘Uthmān al-Jazarī, is disputed). The popular additions — such as the angels Jibrīl and Mīkā’īl guarding ‘Alī — are fabricated (al-Albānī, al-Silsilah al-Ḍa‘īfah 4946) and are not taught.

The visit

“The companionship?” — “Yes.”

‘Ā’ishah said: “One day, while we were sitting in Abū Bakr’s house in the heat of noon, someone said to Abū Bakr: ‘Here is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with his head covered, at an hour when he never used to come to us.’ Abū Bakr said: ‘May my father and mother be his ransom! By Allah, nothing but an important matter brings him at this hour.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and asked permission; he was let in and entered. The Prophet ﷺ said to Abū Bakr: ‘Send out whoever is with you.’ Abū Bakr said: ‘They are only your family — may my father be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘I have been given permission to leave.’ Abū Bakr said: ‘The companionship (may I come with you) — may my father be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Yes.’ Abū Bakr said: ‘Then take — may my father be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah — one of these two camels of mine.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘For its price.’”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3905Sahih

Secrecy

At noon, with his head covered, he asked to speak privately — planning carefully is part of trusting Allah.

Honesty

Even from his closest friend he would not take the camel as a gift: “For its price.”

Getting ready

A waistband, a sack of food — and a cave

‘Ā’ishah said: “We prepared the two of them as quickly as we could, and made them a meal packed in a leather sack. Asmā’ bint Abī Bakr cut a piece from her waistband and tied the mouth of the sack with it — and that is why she was called Dhāt al-Niṭāq (the one with the waistband). Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr reached a cave in Mount Thawr and stayed hidden in it for three nights.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3905Sahih

The name given to Asmā’ became an honour: Dhāt al-Niṭāq — a reminder that small acts of service are remembered.

The plan

A clever plan

  1. 1 Leave secretly — only the people who must know are told.
  2. 2 Go south to the cave of Thawr — the opposite direction from Yathrib.
  3. 3 Hide three nights until the search calms down.
  4. 4 ‘Abdullāh brings the news every night; ‘Āmir brings milk.
  5. 5 The guide brings the camels on the third morning and takes a road few people use: the coastal road.
‘Ā’ishah said: “…‘Abdullāh ibn Abī Bakr, a sharp young man, quick to understand, would spend the night with them. He left them before dawn and was with Quraysh in Makkah in the morning, as if he had spent the night there. He did not hear of any plot against them without remembering it, until he brought them the news when darkness fell. And ‘Āmir ibn Fuhayrah, the freed slave of Abū Bakr, grazed a flock of milking sheep near them, and brought it to them an hour after nightfall, so they spent the night with fresh milk — the milk of their sheep, warmed with heated stones — until ‘Āmir ibn Fuhayrah called the sheep away while it was still dark. He did this on every one of those three nights. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr hired a man from Banū al-Dīl — of the clan of ‘Abd ibn ‘Adī — as an expert guide (khirrīt: one skilled at finding the way). He was an ally of the family of al-‘Āṣ ibn Wā’il al-Sahmī and followed the religion of the disbelievers of Quraysh, but they trusted him. They handed him their two camels and agreed to meet him at the cave of Thawr after three nights, with their two camels, on the morning of the third. ‘Āmir ibn Fuhayrah and the guide set off with them, and the guide took them along the coastal road.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3905Sahih
In the cave

“What do you think of two whose third is Allah?”

Abū Bakr said: “I said to the Prophet ﷺ while we were in the cave: ‘If one of them looked down below his feet, he would see us!’ He said: ‘What do you think, Abū Bakr, of two whose third is Allah?’”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3653Sahih
If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
Surat al-Tawbah 9:40

The story of the two doves at the cave has no reliable chain. The spider’s web comes in the same report of Ibn ‘Abbās in Musnad Aḥmad: Ibn Ḥajar and Ibn Kathīr graded its chain ḥasan, while al-Albānī and al-Arna’ūṭ graded it weak. The story of ‘Alī in the bed is shown because, besides Aḥmad’s report, it has a second chain (al-Ḥākim, ṣaḥīḥ, with al-Dhahabī agreeing); the spider’s web has no such support, so it is left to the teacher’s discretion and not put on a slide. The Qur’an and the Sahih tell us what matters — Allah’s help and the calm He sent down.
