How Quraysh fought the message
Mockery
They called him a poet, a magician, a madman — to stop people from listening.
Pressure on Abū Ṭālib
They asked his uncle again and again to stop him or hand him over.
Torture
They tortured the weak Muslims who had no tribe to protect them.
Ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm lists the methods of Quraysh in this order. The verses explain that tests are Allah’s way of showing who is truthful.
Harmed while praying
Look who came to defend him: his young daughter Fāṭimah. The strong men of Quraysh stood laughing; a girl had the courage to act.
Handle calmly. The point: even the Prophet ﷺ was humiliated for his prayer — and he did not stop praying.
“Will you kill a man because he says: My Lord is Allah?”
Abū Bakr quoted the believer of Pharaoh’s family — he was a living example of that verse.
Bilāl, ‘Ammār and Sumayyah
Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ بِلَالٌ
A slave from Abyssinia. He was dragged through the streets of Makkah and left in the burning sun — and he kept repeating: “Aḥad, Aḥad” — “[Allah is] One, One.” Abū Bakr later bought him and set him free.
‘Ammār and his mother Sumayyah آلُ يَاسِرٍ
‘Ammār, his father Yāsir and his mother Sumayyah were tortured together. Sumayyah held firm until she was killed — the historians report that she was the first martyr in Islam.
Bilāl later became the first mu’adhdhin of Islam. Ask: what gave a slave the strength to say “Aḥad” under torture?
“Allah will complete this matter”
Look back
Believers before them suffered even more and stayed firm.
Look ahead
He promised safety across Arabia — and it came true, as the Companions lived to see.
Ṣan‘ā’ and Ḥaḍramawt are both in Yemen; a lone traveller crossing that land safely was unthinkable then.
What we learn
Faith is tested
Every believer is tested; the test shows who is truthful (al-‘Ankabūt 29:2–3).
Defend the oppressed
Fāṭimah and Abū Bakr did not stay silent when the Prophet ﷺ was harmed.
Patience brings victory
“You are in a hurry” — Allah’s promise always comes, in its time.
Quick quiz
They held firm — “Aḥad, Aḥad”
