Who was Khadījah?

Noble

Khadījah bint Khuwaylid was from a noble family of Quraysh.

A businesswoman

She was wealthy and sent her goods with traders to al-Shām.

Wise and pure

She was known for her intelligence and good character.

She hired the young Muḥammad ﷺ to trade with her goods. When she saw his honesty and character, she wished to marry him.

From Ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm. The extra wonders reported from the trip to al-Shām are left out, as they come through weak reports.

The marriage

A blessed marriage

He was 25

Shortly after returning from al-Shām, he married Khadījah. His uncles arranged the marriage.

She was 40

according to Ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm.

Difference of opinion: Ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm says she was forty; some other reports give a younger age, such as twenty-eight. What all agree on: she was his first wife, and he married no one else while she lived.

They lived together about 25 years, until her death in the Year of Sorrow (Chapter 13).

Her rank

“The best of its women”

‘Alī reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of its women [in her time] was Maryam, and the best of its women [in her time] is Khadījah.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3815Sahih

He never forgot her — even many years after she died:

‘Ā’ishah said: “I never felt as protective [jealous] about any of the Prophet’s wives as I did about Khadījah — and I never saw her. But the Prophet ﷺ used to mention her often. Sometimes he would slaughter a sheep, cut it into parts, and send them to Khadījah’s friends. Sometimes I said to him: ‘It is as if there were no woman in the world except Khadījah!’ He would say: ‘She was this and she was that, and from her I had children.’”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3818Sahih

A beautiful lesson in loyalty (wafā’): he kept honouring her friends long after her death.

The family

Their children

Allah gave them six children, according to Ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm:

al-Qāsimالْقَاسِمُson — died young; he was called Abū al-Qāsim after him
Zaynabزَيْنَبُdaughter
Ruqayyahرُقَيَّةُdaughter
Umm Kulthūmأُمُّ كُلْثُومٍdaughter
Fāṭimahفَاطِمَةُdaughter — the only one to live after him
‘Abdullāhعَبْدُ اللَّهِson — died young

Both sons died as little children. The four daughters grew up, accepted Islam and made the Hijrah. All of them died in his lifetime except Fāṭimah.

A son, Ibrāhīm, was born much later in Madinah from Māriyah; he also died as a baby.

Through his wife’s eyes

“Allah will never disgrace you”

Fifteen years later, when the first revelation came and he was afraid, Khadījah comforted him with words that describe the man she knew:

Khadījah said: “No, by Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good ties with your relatives, you carry the burden of the weak, you give to the one who has nothing, you honour your guests, and you help people in times of real hardship…”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3Sahih

Family

He kept ties with relatives.

The weak

He carried their burdens.

The poor & guests

He gave and he hosted.

Hard times

He helped when disaster struck.

The full story of this moment is Chapter 6. Here, focus on the qualities: who knows a man better than his wife?

Age 35

Quraysh rebuild the Ka‘bah

When he was 35, a flood damaged the Ka‘bah, and its walls were weak. Quraysh decided to rebuild it — and agreed to use only money earned in a good way. But that money was not enough, so they built it smaller than Ibrāhīm’s foundations:

‘Ā’ishah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her: “Do you not see that when your people built the Ka‘bah, they made it smaller than the foundations of Ibrāhīm?…”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1583Sahih
THE KA‘BAH as Quraysh rebuilt it al-Ḥijr الحِجْر part of Ibrāhīm’s foundations Door Black Stone

The curved low wall today, called al-Ḥijr or al-Ḥaṭīm, marks the part they could not build. Ask: why would they refuse bad money even for the Ka‘bah?

He worked with them نَقْلُ الْحِجَارَةِ

He carried stones with his own hands

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh said: “When the Ka‘bah was being built, the Prophet ﷺ and al-‘Abbās went to carry stones. Al-‘Abbās said to the Prophet ﷺ: ‘Put your waist-wrap on your neck [to protect your shoulder].’ He fell to the ground, his eyes turned up to the sky, and he said: ‘Give me my waist-wrap!’ — and he tied it back on.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1582Sahih

Even before he was a Prophet, Allah protected his modesty. The young man who would one day teach the world ḥayā’ (modesty) was already living it.

Explain the context gently: men carried heavy stones on their shoulders, and some folded their waist-wraps under the stones as padding. Allah did not allow the Prophet ﷺ to be uncovered.

A dangerous quarrel

Who will place the Black Stone?

When the walls reached the place of the Black Stone, every clan wanted the honour of putting it back. They argued until they almost fought. Then they agreed: the first man to come in through the gate will judge between us. The first one to come in was the Prophet ﷺ. They said: “This is al-Amīn!” — and they accepted his judgement.

A clan of QurayshAnother clanAnother clanAnother clanWho will place the Black Stone? The clans almost came to fighting. He spread out a cloth and put the stone on it. a clana clana clana clan Every clan lifted a corner — together. Then he set the stone in its place with his own hand.
Source: reported by al-Ḥākim in al-Mustadrak (no. 1683) and others from ‘Abdullāh ibn al-Sā’ib, who took part in the building. Shaykh Muqbil al-Wādi‘ī included it among the authentic reports in al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Musnad (no. 578). It is told here in summary.

Let students suggest solutions before pressing the button. His solution gave every clan a share of the honour — and left no one defeated.

Think

Why was it such a good solution?

Everyone won

Tap

Every clan held the cloth, so every clan shared the honour.

No one lost face

Tap

No clan was placed above another, so no one wanted revenge.

Trust made it work

Tap

They accepted his judgement because they already trusted him: “This is al-Amīn.”

Next time two friends argue, look for the solution where both keep their dignity.

Lessons

What we learn

1

Loyalty

He honoured Khadījah’s memory and her friends for the rest of his life.

2

Only good money

Quraysh refused unclean wealth even to build the Ka‘bah — how much more should we?

3

Wisdom and trust

His honesty made people accept his judgement, and his wisdom stopped a war.
